Well keeping with the tradition of only writing about the trendiest issues, there's nothing more "trendy" and "hip" than the most recent demise of Wall Street. To that end the
NY Times' Big Chart of Failure went live this week (gee whiz, its interactive too).
One can't help but scratch their head and wonder... how does this keep happening? Corporations get massive tax breaks from t…

NBC may very well drop
The Torch with this summer's Olympic coverage.
That is what several leading analysts and marketers have been warning of, and the warnings are certainly not without merit. Some of the chief concerns are very significant indeed:
- China's lack of respect for the copyright (may cheapen NBC's exclusive coverage deal)
- Increasing pervasiveness of cheap electronics (think of a nation of several million personal video ca…

If you were on Facebook at all this past Monday, July 15th... you may have noticed a surprising new interface. As I mentioned
on Revyu today, I think the latest updates to Facebook were indeed Microsoft-inspired evil.
Alot of application developers will surely leave Facebook now, since their applications have been taken out of the spotlight. On the positive side, that may remove alot of the clutter, as Fa…

This week Bill Gates formally retired as CEO of Microsoft. This
article by Times online sums it up nicely, plus a video from Gates himself, CNET gives a
more complete look. While this could be one of the most monumental turns in the Technology sector since Microsoft first "aggressively" acquired the DOS base for their operating sy…

"How does it make money?"
As Joe Marchese reminds us in this week's edition of Online Spin:
Investors And Advertisers Playing A Dangerous Game -- Again that's a million dollar question right now. And its also the question on everybody's mind these days, when considering a move from traditional to digital media. It's a simple question, and yet there are many a complex and contrived answer when it gets posed to many of the current leadi…

Earlier this month Bill Gates confirmed rumors and news headlines that he would be
stepping down from his daily activities at Microsoft and handing over the bulk of the control and responsibility of Microsoft's management to current CEO Steve Ballmer.
Since the announcement, and indeed over the course of this transitionary year, Ballmer has already made himself comfortable as he prepares for the position of Mic…

The web as we know it turned 15 years old today. In those 15 years, the web has blossomed, but as its creator Tim Berners-Lee mentions, it has yet to reach its true coming-of-age. Several other well-respected minds from academia and the corporate world alike were interviewed alongside the pioneer by BBC for their
Luminaries look to the future web special.
The general consensus seems to be that Academia has built the foundations for…

Citizen Journalism is not only emerging, but is becoming a dominant form of news media the world over. In South Korea, which currently enjoys one of the most connected and high use mobile data service networks, the model is tried and tested through citizen journalism and online publisher OhMyNews. Being constantly in the nation with the 4th fastest broadband rates and 2nd most pervasive mobile data networks, means that news can come in at a rate much faster than any newspaper in the world could…

Following lawsuits earlier this year from insurance company Geico over the use of its trademark in competitors' ads that rank highly in AdWords next to the search term 'Geico', Google faces more lawsuits at the hands of American Airlines, Rescuecom, and potentially others. MediaPost's Wendy Davis covers the first hearing at the Federal Appeals court in
Federal Court Waxes Theoreti…

This week, BBC reported on what could very well spell the end of online privacy, Phorm Global ISP Data Collection software in:
Phorm: Your questions answered
Companies want to track you. They want to know everything about you so that they can sell you products better. The more effectively they can target you and appeal to you through their advertisements, offers and other promotional efforts, the more revenue they can generate from…

In an interview summary entitled:

In a move that mimics the actions of social networking giant Facebook (withthe opt-out, botched launch of their Beacon advertising program), Google has officially decided to create a new opt-out extension to its popular AdWords Search Engine Marketing program.
It seems that this effort too will eventually lead to backlash, as it does not provide a clear value to the advertiser, and tries to instead force them into additional services which are not part of the original service agreement.

Hillarious post earlier this week from Marc Andreessen's blog:

Apparently
ABC thinks we're all idiots, as his headline reads.
They (the big content production companies and broadcasters) have no idea of the value of viewer's time today... and for reason's beyond our comprehension, instead of finding ways to serve content more conveniently, they are trying to block tools already in u…

Two things that may not necessarily play so well together.
It is kind of shocking when you think about what type of content is readily available nowadays to men & women, boys & girls, children of all ages.
I've had the good... or... lets just say, fortune, of having grown up and lived out my formative years in the 80s and early 90s. This was a period where for the first time, widespread satellite distribution meant you get basically an entire continent's TV programming (and eventually…

Well in case you missed it, some big, potentially industry-shaping headlines in the news this week. In the face of a recession investors are making big, often times bold stock moves, and (dare we say) reminiscent of "
Web 1.0" Bubble Burst days, Technology stocks are once again at the forefront.
The recession couldn't possibly have worse timing for social networking and the Web 2.0 digital media boon, as pockets tighten and Ad Budgets disappear. Seems like bad news as ComScore an…

Old news now, but worth mentioning
Last month, the
Amazon Start-up Challenge took place with a great deal of hype and excitement, and some stiff competition. Apart from being the first ever "Web Services-user-voted" contest, it was also the first contest in which the winner would receive as much as $100,000 (half in cash, half in Amazon Web Services account credit).
In the fin…
